General Information

The New Valley Oasis

known as El-wady al-gadeed. The New Valley Oases occupies some 67% of the Western Desert and 45.8% of the total area of Egypt . It lies 602 km. from Cairo and 232 km. from Assyut. It's bordered by the Governorate of Matruh in the north, Sudan in the south, Libya in the west, and the Governorates of Middle Egypt in the east. It includes the Kharga, Dakhla, Farafrah and Paris oases with more than 99 monuments dating to different ages.

The area enjoys a mixture of the desert environment, green plains, wells, and Sulphur-rich springs, both cold and hot. In one spring, the water temperature reaches 43 C and is suitable for the treatment of rheumatic and digestive ailments, colds and allergies. The oases are famed for their dry climate most of the year, and humidity never exceeds 9.5%. Warm, sunny winters allow them to be an international health spa.

Capital of the New Valley governorate, it lies 232 km. south of Assyut. It is characterized by its numerous monuments, springs and tourist sites such as the ponds of fish in Bulaq Village . Al-Wadi Al-Gadid (The New Valley) Governorate is linked with the Nile Valley through highways networks; Cairo-Assuit and Luxor-Kharga. Establishing two highways, to link El-Farafra and Dayrout directly to Assuit, are underway, besides the local roads networks. There is, also, regular airline between Cairo International Airport and the New Valley airport in El-Kharga. Al-Wadi Al-Gadid Governorate is the biggest in Egypt , still only 150,000 reside it; constituting just 0,004% density per sq. km.

Dakhla Oasis;

Dakhla (capital Mut) is the second provincial capital of the New Valley and lies 200km. north-west of Kharga. This oasis consists of 14 settlements and has a population of about 70,000 people. Dakhla is the farthest oasis out of Cairo and is considered one of Egypt 's most beautiful oases. Dakhla contains several wells, the most important of which are: The Mut Wells in which the temperature reaches 43 C. One well is 1224 meters deep. It has a round swimming pool and tourist rest houses with complete facilities. The pharaonic wells of Ayn al-Qasr in which water temperature reaches 45 C. Lakes, & wild life in Egypt's oasis
They mostly cultivate mulberry trees, date palms, figs and other citrus fruits. Dakhla has retained most of its culture and charm even though it has increased in size by about the double, that was due to government funding and technical training which has revitalized the economy. Dakhla was originally linked with Kharga by means of two tracks, the Darb 'Ayn Amur and the Darb el-Ghubbari. The first was shorter and provided with an intermediate water station, the little oasis of 'Ayn Amur, but more difficult, since it climbed the plateau dividing the two oases, while the second was longer and without water, but easier for heavy-loaded caravans. The modern road follows more or less the direction of this track, and in fact groups of graffiti and rock inscriptions left by travellers of various periods may be seen on both sides of it. The area along this road is undergoing a significant change. Phosphate is being mined out of the northern plateau, and large settlements have been built to accommodate the people working there and their families.

Farafrah Oasis:

There are remains of roman buildings, including Qasr al-Farafrah, built of mud-brick, and Qasr Abu Minqar.

Paris Oasis: ( Temple of Dush )

Located 90 km. south of Kharga, it houses the Roman Temple of Dush dedicated to the God Serapis. There is also a mud-brick Turkish fortress, an ancient church and some pottery dating to the Coptic period.
