  Sultan Qalawun Mosque
In the late 13th century, Sultan Qalawun started a dynasty that would last for a hundred years. Two of his many accomplishments were the defeats of the Christian and Mongol states. The Sultan's complex houses a mausoleum, a hospital and a school. The hospital was a respected establishment and popular center for medical studies. The Muslim states were advanced in medicine during the Middle Ages and hospitals like Sultan Qalawun's played an important role in the progress of medicine until the Modern age. Patients were well cared for in this hygienic environment where doctors were present at all times. They were fed and cured free of charge. Today, however, all that remains of the hospital are a few elaborately decorated walls. The main entrance to the complex opens into a 10-meter-high corridor, where on the left you will find the school. This is the best preserved part of the complex containing one of the largest and most richly decorated prayer niches of Medieval Cairo. To the right, you will find Qalawun's mausoleum, a signature of elegant Mameluke architecture richly decorated with wood, stucco and stone inlay. An impressive dome accentuated with stained glass windows rises high above the Sultan's final resting place. Sharia El Muizz 3km east of Midan el Tahrir
