The late leader of the Ismailis, Aga Khan III chose to be buried here in this simple yet beautiful mausoleum. The Ismailis were a shi'ite sect originating in India. His wealth was phenomenal, as was his obesity. On his 75th birthday, 1945, he distributed his weight in diamonds among his followers. He preferred to live in Aswan because of the cool winter climate. The mausoleum is an exquisite example of elegant Fatimid architecture. Location: Aswan, on west bank of the Nile.
