This mosque was built between 990 -1013 by the infamous Fatimid caliph, El-Hakim-Bi-Amr-Allah (his name meant: Ruler by God's command). All that remains are the 2 unusual minarets and some religious inscription. Over the years it has been used as a prison, stable, museum and most recently under President Gamal Abdel Nasser, a school. Renovations of the mosque were funded by the Bohras, an Ismaili Muslim sect based in Bombay who claim to be the true descendants of El-Hakim.
